Cambridgeshire Ponds and Water Life
Somersham Ballast Hole

On the east end of Somersham (map ref 367 778) is the site of the old station and the railway line. The railway line is now a valuable parish amenity and is a delightful walk, if somewhat overgrown, to Somersham Fore Fen (site of many gravel pits). About half a kilometer from the old railway station site (where there is ample parking) the path passes the Ballast Hole (map ref 366 783) - so called because the hole was left when ballast was dug out here to build the railway line. The hole filled with water and originally was simply another waste pit, into which old cars and other scrap was thrown!

Over the years, the ballast hole has been cleaned up and planted with trees and is now a delightful ornamental lake, home to many different water lilies. There is a walk circling the lake, which is nearly rectangular. It also provides fishing for Somersham residents.
